Tell us about yourself!
Hi #TIUteam! I’m Carrie. I’m a 35-year-old stay at home mom in Charlotte, NC (shoutout to my #tiucarolina girls!). My daughter, Clara, is 17 months. We live with my amazing husband, Michael, and our 5-year-old American Eskimo dog, Kona. I love going to concerts and I’m obsessed with Hawaii!
What was your biggest inspiration to make a change in your life?
I danced and was a cheerleader throughout high school. As a result, I was really tiny, and some people thought that “skeleton” was a good nickname. It killed my self esteem, and I felt ugly and like there was something wrong with me. So after I graduated, I stopped. I didn’t dance, I wasn’t active. All I wanted was to gain weight, and be “normal.” Well, I did gain weight, but then I just thought I was fat. In 2008 I was in a head-on collision and shattered my right ankle and had to have reconstructive surgery. And that become an excuse for further inactivity. I became pregnant in 2012, and ballooned to 192 pounds by the end of my pregnancy. Even though I lost the majority of that weight through breastfeeding, I felt really gross and uncomfortable in my skin. I asked myself, “how am I going to raise a daughter to love herself when I don’t even LIKE myself?” It was really eye-opening, and the catalyst to GET MOVING.
How did you find out about Tone It Up?
I was scrolling through Twitter last January and a friend tweeted about Tone it Up. I honestly can’t remember why that tweet caught my eye. I think it might have been the name – toning it up was exactly what I wanted to do! I checked out toneitup.com and pretty much spent an entire day reading success stories. It had a huge impact on me!
I was also really impressed by how Karena and Katrina laid everything out for us. A weekly schedule? I didn’t have to pay for a gym or a personal trainer? I could do all of this at home, on my own time, at my own pace? Amazing!
I couldn’t wait to start. I pretty much fell in love!
How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
In the beginning, it was really hard, to be honest. I just kept telling myself to KEEP GOING. I wanted to make working out a habit. But I REALLY wanted to prove to myself that I could do this; I wanted to become a healthy, happy person! I became active on the TIU Community, and then I made a TIU Instagram account in June. The TIU community is the best motivation ever. I love everything about it!
Did you have any setbacks along the way?
My biggest setback came during this past BIKINI SERIES when I got sick for 2.5 weeks! I hated it! I had finally gotten to the point where I was working out regularly, and I was really scared that it would throw me back to my old ways. I made sure I logged into the TIU community every day to keep myself motivated, even though I couldn’t physically work out. As I started to feel better, I worked out as I could, and eased myself back into it. I just refused to let myself fail.
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
The Nutrition Plan was a total game changer! I thought I was eating pretty well before I bought the plan, but it was eye-opening just how much better I could be – and should have been – eating.
Since buying the plan, I’ve lost 13 pounds!! I love the recipes, how easy they are to follow, and my husband loves them too! I’d always suffered from digestive issues in the past, but I’ve felt so much better these past few months. I have more energy, which is great for chasing after my toddler. I also love how easy it is to get back on track after a few treats!!!

What are your favorite healthy foods and snacks?
I love seafood!! We eat tilapia, salmon, and shrimp often. The North Shore Garlic Shrimp is a staple! I also love the Turkey Pumpkin Chili, and I might have a slight obsession with Perfect Fit Pancakes! My favorite thing to do is layer the pancakes with vanilla Greek yogurt and top with blueberries and raspberries, or pomegranate seeds – it’s like eating dessert!
How do you treat yourself while staying on track?
First, I let myself “cheat” in moderation. Going into this, I knew I wouldn’t be successful if I felt like I was depriving myself. So I don’t. I allow myself to indulge once or twice a week. I just try to limit my cheats to 1-2 a week, if that. I also enjoyed finding different ways to enjoy my favorite foods without cheating. For instance, on “Taco Tuesdays,” I make mine into a spinach taco salad! I still get to enjoy one of my favorite meals, but I keep it lean, clean and green, too!
What is your workout routine like?
I follow the Weekly Workout Schedule as closely as possible. My husband is amazing, and has been such a huge support through this process. Most mornings, he gets himself ready for work and then gets our daughter up and started with breakfast. This allows me to fit in my BootyCall! I typically do cardio in the morning, and then do toning while Clara takes a nap. We also take the dog for lots of walks around the neighborhood, which is usually good for 1 or 2 miles each day! Of course, as a mom, every day is different, so I do the best I can. If she doesn’t nap, I workout after dinner. I make the time to meet my goals.

What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?
Start small. Set small, attainable goals so you don’t get overwhelmed and end up beating yourself. I also think it’s really important not to compare your journey to someone else’s. I was guilty of this but I had to remind myself that this is my journey, and my story. I am the one doing it, nobody else. We aren’t all built the same. Our bodies react to these lifestyle changes so differently. It’s really important to keep going to find the best possible you.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself?
That I CAN do this. I enjoy the process, and I love myself again!!! So far, every goal I set for myself I’ve met. It might have taken a little bit longer than I first hoped, but I did it. I have become someone who gets antsy when I don’t workout! I’ve tried things I never thought I’d try, and I’m really enjoying every moment. It’s so fascinating to watch my body transform. I am confident and feel great in my skin. I walk and stand taller! I also was surprised by how much I love inspiring others! It literally makes my day when someone tells me I inspired them.
