Tell us about yourself.
My name is Kelsey and I am a 26 year old currently living in Vernon Hills, IL which is about an hour northwest of Chicago, but I’m originally from Indiana. I am an Anesthesia Veterinary Technician in the area and I absolutely love what I do. I get to help save animal’s lives as a living! My family is all in Indiana but I moved here for a relationship… still going strong! I have one dog, Tori. She is a Wheaten Terrier and she will be 14 years old in November.
What made you decide to change and what was your biggest inspiration to finally make a change in your life?
My before picture tells it all. I was overweight (the heaviest I have ever been). I was depressed after moving to a new state, away from all my family and friends, and I was at a new job that added a whole new level of stress to my life. I was eating pizza and cookies and whatever anyone brought in to work and set in front of me! I was miserable, depressed, and tired and I knew that something had to give.
What goals did you set for yourself in order to make a change?
My initial goal was just to get moving! I just wanted to start working out and stop eating all the treats people brought into work. From there I set a goal to run a 5K, then a 10 mile race, and now I just ran my first half marathon earlier this month! I couldn’t even run a full mile when I first started this journey!
How did you find out about Tone It Up?
I used to watch a lot of YouTube and beauty guru Elle Fowler talked about Tone It Up in one of her videos, I was sucked in immediately!
How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
I just feel better. I wake up and feel rested, I feel energized throughout the day, and I look forward to my morning workout. My Booty Call always starts my day off on the right foot, I feel refreshed and ready to conquer the day! Also, setting intermittent goals has been a HUGE motivator for me! I am pretty good at sticking to my training plans, for example this half marathon training has kept me running almost daily for 10 weeks straight, no excuses!
Did you have any setbacks along the way? If so, how did you overcome them?
Of course! I will have days, weeks, even months at a time where I’m not as committed as I would like to be with my nutrition, workouts, or both. I remind myself that as long as I am eating healthy and working out the majority of the time, slipping up isn’t the end of the world. I’m only human… and just because you fall off the wagon for a little bit doesn’t mean you can’t get back on!
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
The Tone It Up Nutrition Plan has completely changed the way I look at food! The biggest thing I have learned is what to eat and when. I had no idea how much it really matters when you eat certain types of foods!
I have developed a love for fresh produce and appreciate new ingredients I hadn’t heard of before like stevia, almond milk, cacao nibs, the list goes on forever!
What are you doing now to keep up with your healthy lifestyle?
Meal planning and prepping is huge for staying on track. “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” Life is busy and it’s hard to prep meals every day, so my favorite thing to do is get as much meal prep done on Sundays as I can. It makes a world of difference to have everything ready! Also, planning out my workouts ahead of time so I know how much time I need to allow myself in the morning to get it done. The Weekly Schedule helps so much with this!
What are some of your favorite healthy foods and snacks?
I love the turkey meatballs!! My boyfriend Kyle loves them too, so I make a big batch at the beginning of every week along with a bunch of quinoa. I really love plain Greek yogurt with a little bit of fruit and a sprinkle of stevia. Another favorite are KIND bars, I always have a selection of flavors in my purse. This week I made the Strawberry-Apple strudel bars and HOLY COW, I want to eat them every day for the rest of my life, they are SO tasty!
How do you treat yourself while staying on track?
I LOVE chocolate, especially chocolate ice cream or frozen yogurt. So, occasionally we will go and get some for a special treat, I probably get it every couple of weeks but I never regret it! I’ve made it a point to keep almost all junk food out of the house so that it’s easier to stay on track with the plan. It makes such a huge difference when it isn’t convenient!
What is your workout routine like?
Lately my workouts have been mainly running. But when I’m not training for a race, I follow the Weekly Schedule, completing whatever toning routines are listed for that day. For my cross training days I almost always do a HIIT workout from one of the Beach Babe DVDs; they are some of my faves.
What is your favorite Tone It Up workout?
I love the HIIT routine, but I LOVE the Thailand Tush workout. It burns SO good! Bikini Abs from this year’s BIKINI SERIES is definitely another one of my favorites, my abs are always on fire at the end of it. It’s really hard to pick, I don’t think there has ever been one I didn’t like!
What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?
Don’t give up! There will be setbacks, you will feel like it’s impossible, but it isn’t. Take pictures, it’s easier to see change in yourself this way. Reward yourself with little things you want when you reach certain goals (I try not to reward myself with food!). There is no better time than right now to start working towards a better you!
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself during this journey?
I actually love my body. I look at myself and I am genuinely happy. I didn’t know I was capable of it. No, I’m not perfect, but I have worked so hard to get to where I am today. I put myself and my health first for once in my life and I have never been more proud.
