Motivation Monday ~ Gina’s Story!
Tell us about yourself!
Hey! I’m Gina. I live in Nampa, Idaho, but grew up an Oregon girl. I work as a secretary for a drugstore chain and have worked several jobs within stores as well. My husband and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary in 2013. We have 2 daughters, Emily (3 1/2), Sophie (2) & 1 orange cat, named Mo.
What made you decide to change and what was your biggest inspiration to finally make a change in your life?
After my youngest girl had her 1st birthday, I went through a very hard time dealing with self-image. I wasn’t happy and didn’t feel like myself in my own body. I spent many nights in tears feeling helpless. I was very low-energy, uncomfortable and just sad. For my whole life I seriously had been surviving on junk food and it was time to change. My husband was so encouraging, gently reminding me about this “BIKINI SERIES thing….” and while it was the last thing I wanted to hear, somehow, I set my excuses aside and joined Tone It Up for the 2013 BIKINI SERIES challenge. And I purchased a new pair of running shoes as my Mother’s Day gift to myself!
What goals did you set for yourself in order to make a change?
First, to focus on nourishing my body with what I eat and drink. Somehow I had never really considered this before in my life! It was time to cut out soda, white starches, and step away from sugar. It was a big change! Also, I had get moving, even though it was hard to find the time. For me, this meant using my jogging stroller, a lot! It amazed me when I started to see significant changes within 2 weeks!
How did you find out about Tone It Up?
Through Elle Fowler on YouTube. I am such a huge YouTube fan! When Elle mentioned Tone It Up, I had to see what it was all about.
How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
I took weekly progress pictures. The changes were so great, it was a reminder that I was really making progress! For my first challenge, I wasn’t too involved in the Community, but kept following the plan. I am now a part of the Community and I post on Instagram with hashtag #TIUTeam, it is crazy how much of a motivation all of you ladies are!
Did you have any setbacks along the way and how did you overcome them?
Yes. Over the winter, my daughter went through a handful of sicknesses. Caring for her and balancing work had me in a downward spiral. Once it was time for the Love Your Body series, I knew I needed to make my health a priority again. It was the perfect time to re-focus, and I had so much fun participating! I made sure to plan out my meals and workouts. I Checked in with the team, sharing my plans and if I said I was going to workout, then I did — I couldn’t let them or myself down! The team dynamic honestly works wonders for me.
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
When my husband ventured into the “lets get stacked and eat a pizza a day” plan (not going to work for me!) I knew the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan was an important missing piece of my puzzle! I love having more options, and direction! Also, knowing what types of food are best at different times of the day is great. My stomach that tended to build out has finally really starting to trim down and show definition! I feel energized and with 5 meals, I definitely don’t feel deprived!
What are you doing now to keep up with your healthy lifestyle?
Checking in with my #TIUTeam and my local girls (shout out to #TIUIdaho!) keeping a food journal and keeping up with the Weekly Fitness Schedule!
What are some of your favorite healthy foods and snacks? What did you have for lunch today?
I love to have veggies with hummus, Greek yogurt with blueberries and Larabars. I also have a lot of juiced fruits and veggies to take in plenty of nutrients. I’m definitely sweet tooth type of gal and the plan has plenty of sweet options to enjoy, in a healthy way! Lunch today was the Pb banana snack wrap…so yummy, my kiddos love it too! I also love to have Gardein beefless tips with brussels sprouts for a filling dinner. I was so surprised to love the fall edition of the Nutrition Plan the most! It contains so many easy options for someone that needs quick ideas for family and easy options for work!
How do you treat yourself while staying on track?
I LOVE to enjoy a nice warm cup of almond milk with stevia and cinnamon in the evening. It is so comforting and satisfying. I really like to celebrate reaching a goal by rewarding myself with a new shirt or fun lipgloss (I am a true beauty junkie)! Also, a girls night out is the most fun way to enjoy all of the hard work, and we can all feel encouraged and focused!
What is your workout routine like?
I love to run for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. I hope to have more frequent outdoor runs as the sun is just waiting for me to enjoy the warmer weather! I also enjoy Pilates and other classes, in addition to doing some weight lifting at home.
What is your favorite TIU workout?
My favorite workout is Love Your Body with Yoga. Also the Love Your Body with HIIT and all the Kettlebell routines!
What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?
You can make change happen! Surround yourself with encouragement and positivity. Let yourself dream and also love yourself, exactly where you are now. I would also say….to my fellow junk food/sugar junkies out there: it is possible to break the habit and it does get better. Give yourself enough time and don’t be too hard on yourself!
Tell us about your current goals?
I am very excited to see others around me improving their health too, it’s such a domino effect! I am really enjoying learning how to make more fun, delicious recipes from the Nutrition Plan and challenging myself to keep up my workouts and runs! I have my TIU sisters to go into the next BIKINI CHALLENGE with, fun family vacations and the Tone It Up retreat to look forward to! Someday, I hope to have another baby with a healthy, nutritious pregnancy along the way!
