Tell us about yourself!
Hi!! My name is Karlee, I’m 21 and I live in Austin, Texas. I’m studying Nutrition at the University of Texas. I have such an awesome family that has always been there for me, and the most amazing friends I could ever possibly ask for!
What made you decide to change and what was your biggest inspiration to finally make a change in your life?
I vividly remember getting ready for a Cowboys & Indians costume party with my friends sophomore year of college. I was so upset I couldn’t wear the same cute outfits they were wearing and I was so self-conscious. I started to hate going out because I was unhappy with myself. Soon after that night I just started working on what I was eating. It was a gradual process, but I noticed changes in my body within a couple weeks. They were little, but they were there!
My inspiration was, and still is my 31 year old brother. He’s been through so much in his life, including losing 40 pounds. I remember going from watching him eat a banana split everyday after school to hearing about how many miles he ran that day. He has now ran multiple marathons and I want to run one with him some day! Going through this experience has brought us closer in so many ways. We’re always texting each other about a new snack or a new meal we created.
My other inspiration was myself. I was unhappy with myself so I had to do it for me. When I noticed my body changing and my clothes fitting differently, it was my motivation to keep going and my reminder of why I was doing it. There is no better motivation than seeing your hard work pay off in big ways!
What goals did you set for yourself in order to make a change?
I started with calorie counting, which was very tedious and got to be repetitive. I set daily goals like how many calories to try to have a day and how many minutes of cardio. This got boring and only got me so far. I also remember a dress I had for a couple years but had never worn because it was too tight around my hips. That was my goal dress and it felt so good when I put it on!
How did you find out about Tone It Up?
Counting calories got super exhaustive and boring, so when I saw Tenley Molzahn post something on social media about Tone It Up, I decided to do some research. I’m so thankful I saw that post! I was bored with calorie counting and had hit a plateau with my weight loss. Tone It Up was the perfect change I needed! There were so many things I didn’t know about nutrition and I learned so much about how to be healthier overall.
How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
I just thought about how happy I was compared to how sad I was before. Living a healthy lifestyle makes me feel so much better even aside from the weight loss; it wasn’t something I was willing to give up!
Did you have any setbacks along the way? How did you overcome them?
I did NOT like working out in public. I wanted so badly to run outside or even at the gym but I was embarrassed of how I looked while doing it. I finally realized I needed to stop worrying about it. If I ever wanted to see any results I had to get over that fear. I started using the elliptical because I was more comfortable on that but then worked my way up to running.
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
The Tone It Up Nutrition Plan has taught me so much! I love all the recipes and little tricks about what to eat during what time of the day. I also love the Meta-D. This past summer, my mom, our dogs and I went on a walk every morning and when we came back, we’d have our Meta-D together. We both love it! I even got my grandma into it when she visited. The Nutrition Plan also sparked my interest in nutrition and is a huge part of why I changed my major to nutrition.
Through the plan and this community, I learned that eating healthy and working out isn’t just something you do to lose weight only to go back to “normal” life. It’s about creating a new “normal.” I tried EVERY fad diet and workout I could think of before Tone It Up helped me realize this.
What are you doing now to keep up with your healthy lifestyle?
I still follow the Nutrition Plan and read the blog daily! It’s nice to have a community you know is there doing the same thing with you. Also, I’ve recently switched to eating gluten free because of a gluten intolerance and I feel so much better. I love finding new healthy recipes!
I also love running. Austin has so many pretty trails to run on and it’s great living here because it is such an active city; there’s always something fun and new to try, like paddle board yoga on the lake… sounds disastrous for me but fun!
What are some of your favorite healthy foods and snacks? What did you have for lunch today?
My FAVORITE snack is a sliced apple sprinkled with cinnamon, cooked in the microwave for two minutes and a glass of almond milk. So easy, I have it almost every morning! I also love KindBars when I’m on the go. I also just discovered chocolate PB2 with a banana is perfect when I want something sweet or chocolatey. Another favorite will always be the Perfect Fit Protein Pancakes from the Nutrition Plan.
For lunch today I had a ground turkey taco salad with sautéed zucchini, squash, onions, black beans, jalapeños and hot sauce. It’s my go-to lunch.
How do you treat yourself while staying on track?
I have a major sweet tooth after I eat dinner sometimes. I always have a dark chocolate bar handy for when I’m craving it. The thing that has changed most about my “treats” is the amount I eat. I used to want to eat half (or the whole) bar, but now I just need one little square to satisfy my craving. Also, I’ve learned how to recreate my favorite meals that weren’t so healthy into healthier ones. If I’m craving a burger, I’ll order a turkey burger with no bun and make it into a salad. Now, I’m at the point where I enjoy that as much as I enjoyed a burger two years ago.
It’s important to treat yourself every once in a while. People get off track when they don’t allow themselves to “cheat” occasionally. It’s a lifestyle change so you have to be sure you’re making it realistic.
What is your workout routine like?
There’s a neighborhood near my apartment complex I love running in. I run there every morning then come back to the weight room in my apartment complex before heading back to my room where I do a Tone It Up workout. I also have an elliptical in my room that I get on all the time. It’s so convenient and if I’m ever just watching TV or bored I’ll get on it!
What are your favorite Tone It Up workouts?
I love all the HIIT routines. They’re such great workouts and I always feel so good after doing one.
What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?
It might be difficult at first because it is such a huge change in your life but if you stick with it and commit 100%, you will see the changes. Once you start seeing changes in how you look and most importantly how you feel, you’ll be your own motivation and the rest will go from there!
A huge change that worked for me was not eating out. I cooked just about every meal for myself. The Nutrition Plan has so many delicious and easy recipes, it was easy to want to eat at home!
Tell us about your current goals? What are you looking forward to in the next few months?
Right now my goal is to find a gym to join and try out new workout classes to spice up my routine a little bit! It would be fun to get into yoga and cardio kickboxing classes. I would also like to work on running longer distances so I can catch up to brother some day!
