Tell us about yourself

My name is Veronica and I am 32 years old.  I am a small-town girl living in South Carolina with my son, husband, and 4 furry kiddos. I grew up in Virginia, and have lived in a number of different states since college, including Maine, which was my favorite.  Right now, I am lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom for my 15-month-old son, Mason.  I am a certified teacher, and before I gave birth, I worked at a non-profit sexual trauma center as a community educator, going out into the schools and teaching kids about healthy relationships.

Your transformation story is amazing and has inspired us all. How long was it between your before and after pics?

There is a year difference between my before and after pics.  I gave birth to my son in May of 2013, and have lost 70 lbs since then.

Wow! Amazing. What was your biggest inspiration to finally make a change in your life?

Mason was truly my inspiration for changing my life.  Before I got pregnant, I was fairly active and healthy.  I promised myself I would continue to take care of my body when I found out I was pregnant, but instead, my pregnancy consisted of absolutely no physical activity and a lot of junk food. I ended up gaining 50 lbs, and tipping the scale at 204 lbs.  I was so disappointed in myself after I gave birth, and felt like I had completely let Mason down by not being healthy during my pregnancy. I knew I needed to be a better example of self-control and determination for him.  I wanted him to be able to look up to me instead of being disappointed because his mother can’t follow through with what she says.  I also wanted to prove to myself that I could finish something, since I have a bad habit of giving up when things get tough.

What goals did you set for yourself in order to make a change?

My ultimate goal was to lose 60lbs by Mason’s first birthday. I also wanted to be an athlete again, like I was when I played volleyball and tennis in college.  The crazy thing is that I’m in so much better shape now than I have ever been in my life.

How did you find out about Tone It Up?

I found out about Tone It Up after watching the first season of Toned Up on Bravo. I thought Karena and Katrina’s friendship was amazing, and they were so positive, fun, and down-to-earth.  I decided to check out their YouTube videos and website. I then joined the community and eventually purchased the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan.

How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?

The fact that my non-pregnancy clothes were fitting again, and I was seeing progress in the mirror definitely kept me going. I also met quite a few amazing women in the Tone It Up community that helped encourage me the entire way through.  The TIU community is like no other fitness community I’ve ever experienced.  I’ve never been part of a group with so much genuine positivity, inspiration, and encouragement.  I have so much love for all the women I have met through Tone It Up.

Did you have any setbacks along the way?

My biggest setback was getting frustrated with my slow progress.  I saw other women losing 5+ pounds a week, and I just didn’t want to accept that my body wasn’t meant to lose weight that quickly.  I kept getting down on myself because my progress was slow, but members of the TIU community helped me realize that any PROGRESS is PROGRESS, no matter how fast or slow. It all adds up in the end, and you will eventually reach your goals. I just need to be patient and give it time.

How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success? tiu-tone-it-up-nutrition-program-toneitup-nutrition-plan

The Tone It Up Nutrition Plan has completely changed my view of food.  It has helped me realize food is fuel for my body (not a reward for doing something well), and healthy food doesn’t have to be bland or taste bad.  Before I purchased the plan, I only focused on counting calories, and that was very time-consuming. I love how I don’t have to worry about counting calories on the plan, as long as I listen to my body and eat what the plan maps out.

What are you doing now to keep up with your healthy lifestyle?

I work out 5-6 days per week during my son’s naps, or any other time I can fit it in. I also try to have a Perfect Fit Smoothie every day for lunch and do my best to have a clean dinner.  I  sit down and plan my workouts and meals for the week every Sunday night. And I also post videos and pictures of my workouts on Instagram and Twitter to help myself stay accountable.

What are some of your favorite healthy foods and snacks?

Right now my favorite healthy snack is Tribe Hummus with Ryvita crackers or sweet peppers.  I love plain Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and apples with natural peanut butter.  I also am obsessed with the Strawberry-Apple Strudel Bars in the Summer Sizzle Edition of the Tone It Up plan.  They are absolutely to die for!  Perfect for a sweet tooth like mine.

How do you treat yourself while staying on track?

I’ve come to realize that it’s OK to have a cheat meal and not be perfect all the time.  I used to beat myself up when I would eat something that wasn’t clean, and then I would binge eat the rest of the day since I had already cheated. Honestly, working out has been the easy part of losing the weight.  The food was the difficult part for me. And it still is. I still struggle daily with my cravings and self-control, but I’m much better than I used to be.  I just try to stick to the 80/20 rule (eating clean 80% of the time), because that is more realistic for me.

What is your workout routine like?

I work out 5-6 days per week, between 1 and 1 ½ hours a day, and I include both strength and cardio.  If my son’s nap is really short, and I can’t fit in a workout session, I will go for a walk or run with him in the jogging stroller to make up for lost time.  I also try to change up my workouts every few weeks, so that my body doesn’t get used to a certain workout.

Favorite Tone It Up workout?

My absolute favorite workout is the Hula Booty workout from the Beach Babe 2 DVD.  Talk about booty work!!  I really feel the burn every time I do that workout.  I also love the Cowabunga workout, the Best Ab Routine, and ALL the Bikini Series workouts. Ok, honestly, I love all the TIU workouts.  That’s my final answer.

What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?

Be patient.  It will take time to reach your goals.  Just remind yourself that progress is progress, and everything adds up in the end.  Make friends in the community with similar goals so that you have someone that can relate and help motivate you throughout your entire journey.  And remember, it is a journey.  You will have good days and bad days. If you mess up, just shake it off and start fresh the next day with a clean slate.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself during this journey?

The most surprising thing about this journey is that I am FINALLY comfortable in my own skin.  Even in college, when I weighed 10 lbs less, I was never happy with my body. But now, I can truly say I love what my body has become in the last few years, along with every flaw. I love my stretch marks and my mommy pooch, because they are a reminder of the beautiful miracle that was living in my belly for 9 months.

Tell us about your current goals? What are you looking forward to most in the next few months?

My current goals are toning up the backs of my thighs and working on getting a Kat booty! In the process of losing 70 lbs, I managed to lose my butt as well, so I’m determined to get it back. And the biggest thing I am looking forward to is the Tone It Up Retreat at the end of September.  I will be sad to leave my son for 5 days, but it will be the experience of a lifetime and will be nothing short of epic. I seriously CANNOT wait!
