Tell us about yourself!
Hi, I’m Erin and I’m from Hawaii! I attended college at the University of Hawaii and studied abroad for one year in Tokyo, Japan. I later went to law school, and I’ve been an attorney for the last 3 years. My husband and I were married 2 years ago, and we have two loving, affectionate cats. I’m also the proud aunt of three nephews.
What inspired you to change your life?
I hadn’t been happy with my body for a long time, but I never bothered to change my diet. I was in denial, saying the scale must be broken because I can’t possibly weigh that much, or there must be some other reason why I can’t fit into my clothes. I love at-home workout videos, and never had a problem being fairly consistent doing them. But exercise didn’t help me reach a healthy weight because my diet was extremely poor.
Then I got the shock of my life. My doctor told me I was pre-diabetic and overweight. I now had to lose weight and watch my sugars, doctor’s orders! This was the biggest reason why I decided to make a change in my life. Diabetes runs in my family, and my grandfather died due to complications from diabetes.
What goals did you set for yourself?
My goals were to lose 15-20 pounds, and to get my blood sugar levels to normal. When I first started, my goals were short term, but now that I’ve accomplished them, I’m seeing what fitness and good nutrition can do. I lost 26 pounds, and my blood sugar levels are now excellent. I’m not only so much healthier and energized, but I can focus more clearly and am much more happy and confident in all aspects of my life, both professionally and personally!
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
The plan was the key to my success. I’ve tried other “diets” in the past, and none worked for me. But something about the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan clicked and was the perfect match. The guide for everyday eating is very clear and easy to follow. What I love most about the plan is the extremely detailed information about the healthy foods to eat and why they’re good for you. I now understood the purpose of foods or what each one does for my body. I started following the plan very closely, and the weight just dropped! My body loved the healthy nutrition recommended by the plan! Now that I’m in the maintenance mode I have a little more flexibility, but the concepts, lessons, and way of thinking about nutrition I learned from the plan will stay with me for life.
How did you find out about Tone It Up?
I found Tone It Up through YouTube, and I immediately fell in love with the workouts. I was also searching the internet for clean, organic protein powders, and was excited to see that Perfect Fit Protein was made by the same girls, Karena & Katrina! I was then drawn to the info about the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan because of my health problems. It all fell into place from there.
How did you keep yourself motivated to keep going?
I kept myself motivated by remembering my end goals. First, I imagined how good it would feel to love my body for the very first time in my entire life. I also thought about the pain and suffering my grandfather went through having diabetes, and reminded myself that I didn’t want to go through that. I thought about how nice it would be to have amazing energy levels and to not want to fall asleep at work.
Whenever I needed a little more motivation, I’d re-read parts of the Nutrition plan to refocus on my meals, or go on the website or YouTube to listen to the amazing inspiration from Karena & Katrina.
Did you have any setbacks along the way? If so, how did you overcome them?
My setbacks included people questioning what I was doing or making hurtful comments. Some would ask why I was doing this, I don’t need to lose weight. When I’d have a healthy green smoothie for one of my meals, I’d get comments such as, “is that all you eat?” They didn’t know or quite understand I was eating whole, nutritious foods and having 5 meals a day!
To overcome this, I’d reveal my personal health issues and move on, not forcing anyone to understand. This has taught me that I too will never completely understand another person’s needs. I now remember to stay respectful of other people’s goals and ambitions. I also have an amazing husband and an amazing marathon-running friend. Both always support my fitness goals and encourage me to keep going!
Now that you’ve reached your goal, how do you keep up with your healthy lifestyle?
I LOVE re-reading the Nutrition Plan and looking for new recipes to try! I also meal prep on Sundays and Wednesdays to have as many healthy meals at work as possible.
What are some of your favorite meals & snacks?
Ezekiel bread, quinoa, sweet potatoes, brown rice, Greek yogurt with frozen blueberries, spinach, grilled asparagus and tomatoes, kale, green smoothies, carrots & hummus, black bean chili, lentil soups, vegetable curries, tofu veggie stir fry, and Perfect Fit Protein. Above all else, I LOVE almond butter! My typical lunch is a big plate of power greens, chili, and sweet potato or brown rice. For a snack, I love the Slim Down Smoothie or any of the quinoa recipes from the plan.
How do you treat yourself?
To treat myself while staying on track, I look for healthier versions of treats. If I’m craving a dessert, I’ll have nonfat Greek yogurt mixed with fruit or protein powder. If I want chips, I’ll have kale chips. Healthier options can be amazingly delicious! It’s all about what you do most of the time, so for celebrations or big events I’ll have a small portion of cheesecake and ice cream.
What is your workout routine like?
I workout 5 days a week, and each workout is 1 hour of heavy lifting, 30 minutes of cardio and some core work. I like to switch up my workout routine around every 3 months. Because I work a job with long hours, I wake up at 3 am on workdays so that I can workout and still get to work on time. This has required a lot of extra planning to make sure I get enough sleep, but it is so worth it!
Your favorite Tone It Up routines?
The TPS Report Workout, Long & Lean Arms, and 3 Moves to Toned Thighs. Having a long-hour desk job, the TPS workout saves my back and shoulders and gives me energy to get through the day. I try to do it everyday at the office, and I love how it gets my heart rate up and makes me feel alive!
What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?
Remember, no one is the same. We are all beautifully unique. If something doesn’t work for you, it’s okay! Something else will, and the main thing is to keep striving for your own health and happiness. All you need to do is start consistently incorporating healthy habits into your daily activities, and you’ll see results. Consistency is key, be stubborn when it comes to your health!
